Brooklyn Turkey Trot!

11:22 AM KyannaSimone 0 Comments

How was everyone’s Thanksgiving? Did you eat all you can eat and then some? Surprisingly I didn’t, I had all idea of eating two and three plates of food last night and I struggled to finish one. But it doesn’t matter, that one plate was so good and this means, more leftovers!

Before I actually I started my Thanksgiving festivities I completed the five-mile Turkey Trot in Prospect Park. Which of course it was freezing! 37 degrees!  What?! I mean I’ve never run in those types of temperatures before, so it was a real shock to my system to do so. But I was layered up, I’m talking about high knee socks, two pairs of tights, three shirts, my bright pink sweater, my scarf, oh and my gloves. So I was pretty ok for the most part.

*Me dancing to the Nae Nae on the train platform.

As I mentioned to you guys before I decided to join Black Girls Run! Which is probably the best thing I could have done. I met up with a lady name Ngozi, who is a member of BGR! she lives in my area so we thought it would have been a good idea to go there together.

From there I met some of the other members of Black Girls Run! It was just an instant family affair. Everyone was so welcoming, good mornings were warm and friendly, didn’t do much of an introduction because we were busy trying to take pictures but that’s ok, there will be more events to learn everyone’s name.

Look there’s me! #323

I met Allison, (@girlwithoutattoo) FINALLY! She’s in my other running group NYCInstaRunners.
After this I went to the starting line with @Glamnellie (I don’t remember her first name, SMH) and Tanya, (I don’t know her Instagram name) of course we were freezing but we kept moving.

*Waiting to start

When I got to the start line I saw my friend Miriam and she ran a portion of the race with me with her boyfriend Jesse. But Miriam is a speed demon so I couldn’t keep up with her.

I spent a lot of time on the course taking pictures and checking my phone, I don’t know why I didn’t take this race a little more seriously but hey, such is life. I did however realize that I was running more, taking less walk breaks and actually maintaining a pace.

So I finished in 1:04:47. My previous five-mile time was 1:10:56. So that’s a PR for me baby! In this weather, I’m shocked. Oh yea and it started snowing. But what was I going to do, nothing but run!
After I got my medal, took a picture with BGR! and Black Men Run. It was Thanksgiving so of course we all went our separate ways to get back home and spend time with our families.

*Go us!

Of course when I got home, I took a shower and slept for three hours, then started to cook. But check my medal out!

*After the race

How was your Thanksgiving? What did you eat? And are you planning to go shopping today?

PS: Sorry this isn’t written how I usually write my race post, but it won’t happen again. Xo.

Asics Gel Nimbus 16 NYC

THEY ARE HERE!!!!

Look at these beautiful sneakers, I felt like a kid on Christmas morning when I opened the box. I love new gear, I swear I love them more than "regular"clothes and shoes at times. But just to throw on a pair of sneakers and compressions tights to walk out the door is a great feeling.

But I guess it would be a great idea to tell you guys how I got these sneakers right? So let's start from there. One day on twitter Asics was hosting a #BestRun chat and the winner gets a pair of Asics sneakers of their (Asics) choosing. I just happened to be on twitter and didn't know that was the prize, I was just so excited that a representative from Asics was tweeting so I was trying to mosey my way into their graces.

A few moments later I realize it was a contest and became very excited because I needed a new pair of running sneakers, badly. My Tri Noosa 9's are just done and I can no longer run in them.

Then I saw a direct message from Asics stating that I won the contest and a pair of sneakers would be shipped to me. Can you believe that? Me! So it did take a couple of weeks and now they are here.

So these particular sneakers were specifically made for the TCS NYC Marathon. How can you tell? Just take a look.

Did you think I didn't run in them already? Of course I did and let me say they are comfortable, a lot of cushion and foot support. But they did hut to run in them for first time as well as me putting my feet in them, this happens to me all the time when I get new sneakers so it's just the "breaking them in" phase that's bothering me but everything else is great.

Something else that I fell in love with was not only the bright color but the reflective patches around the sneaker. As it starts to get darker earlier, it's hard to run in daylight especially when most of the daylight hours I'm at work, so these will come in handy running at night. Now if I can only find some reflective pants.

Very minor but the tongue of these sneakers are so big and cushion-y, that's a plus for me. I like when my pants can fit behind the tongue of the sneakers, I cannot stand small tongues in sneakers, sometimes it makes me feel as I'm not wearing sneakers, weird right?

Oh and the color, it's so bright! You guys know I love bright things and sneakers are no exception, the brighter the better. This will be great for the turkey trot which is now SIX days away.

Overall I'm pleased with the Gel Nimbus 16 NYC. I know I'll be even more please with them when I finally break them in which is why I'm wearing them EVERYWHERE! Then I'll go back to my regular footwear and solely use these for running.

Being silly as usual!

What kind of sneakers do you run/workout in?

Yoga, Running and More Races!

5:42 PM KyannaSimone 6 Comments

As you guys know I purchased a yoga DVD a couple of weeks ago and I started using it as a cross training tool for running. So far I'm pleased with it since I've been doing it constantly (two to three times a week) and I feel a little flexible, but nothing to where I can drop into a Russian split yet.

That's about as far as I can go without hurting myself, it's a "good" uncomfortable feeling you know? That feeling when you're stretching yourself out and you can feel all of the limbs in your body loosen up, but not to the point where you pop something, yup that's a good feeling.

Doing yoga just made me realize all of my problem areas such as my hamstrings, lower back and the tension in my neck. Does anyone else get sleepy after doing yoga or is that just me?

So the prospect park Turkey Trot is SEVEN days away! I'm so excited because I wanted to do this race last year and I didn't get the chance to, due to it selling out very quickly. But this year I'm in and I'm ready to win.

The temperatures in NYC haven't been to friendly this past week, numbers like 39 and 27 are quite low, especially for this time for year. It's autumn but I was still expecting upper and lower 40's. This means the winter is going to be brutal and layers are required.

*I have on multiple layers on, but I think it's time for me to invest in a winter coat.

Not to worry this just gives me practice to run the NYC Half next year since that race is going to be in March. Speaking of the NYC half, I registered for another race! This is a 15K in Atlantic city. Doesn't that sound fun? Food, friends, hotels, casinos and races. I swear I can't wait because the weekend is going to be filled with excitement and great company.

I plan to do some traveling next year as I run for several races. I might be going to Philadelphia or possibly Chicago for a couple of races, I haven't decided yet but you know I'll keep you guys posted.

Where are you guys planning to run got next year? Give me some suggestions!

Transformation Tuesday!

3:57 PM KyannaSimone 1 Comments

It’s Tuesday folks and I just wanted to bring you guys a quick and short transformation. It’s hard for me to conjure up these old photos because I barley have any. Sure I look a lot of headshots throughout the years, but body shots? Nope, it was very hard to come by, because clearly I didn’t like my body, so why take pictures of it?

I wish this year went differently for me, but sure is life I can’t well on what I did or didn’t do. The only thing I can focus on is what I plan on doing and what type of changes I plan on making as I move forward with my life and this wonderful journey that I am on.

2012 vs. 2014

As a look as this picture I get discouraged somewhat, because I feel like I didn’t do enough. These pictures don’t look so much different but I remember the day I was taking the picture, I remember feeling so heavy and so big, I remember those pants barely fitting and I had to keep adjusting them so that they can fit, I remember changing the pants before I left the house because I would have to keep pulling them up every five seconds. That’s what I remember.

Currently in 2014, I don’t worry about things like that anymore. I don’t worry about clothes fitting, I don’t worry about angles (only when I take selfies lol,) when taking pictures, I don’t worry about purchasing clothes because I feel better about myself, I feel better about who I am and what I’ve become and what I’m going to be.

Short sweet and to the point right? Another Tuesday in the books!

What kind of transformations have you guys made? Let me know in the comments below.

Throw Back Thursday: Breast Edition

8:10 PM KyannaSimone 0 Comments

I already know you guys are looking at this title with wide eyes and scratching your heads and you should. I have gotten this question a couple of times throughout my journey and I thought should I just provide proof. The question is…

“Have you breasts shrunk/gone down/got smaller since you started losing weight?”

And the answer to this is yes they have. I used to have to big breast. They didn’t hurt my lower back or anything (I know people like to say that,) but they were just huge. It was hard to find bras that fit properly and a lot of the time I would have to go to a special bra shop just to get a decent bra. Which cost me about $50 - $70.

*Left 2011/Right 2014

Now I don’t have to worry about that so much. The only place I know of getting bras is Macy’s and other department stores and can roughly cost me $25 - $35. Saving me a lot more money and they event fit better then the so called “specialty bras.”

My breasts feel a lot lighter as well. I didn’t know how heavy they were until I notice how light they have gotten, to me they are so small and I want to wear push up bras all the time, but I know I don’t need too because they are still pretty big.

Just another thing to love about this journey, smaller everything!

Has anything gotten smaller on you guys? Wanted or unwanted? I want to hear your stories.

Life & Black Girls Run!

10:56 AM KyannaSimone 0 Comments

Who says you can’t start driving lessons at the age of 24 huh? Not a damn soul, so that’s what I did yesterday. Don’t judge me, I mean I love in NYC, not really space for a car, public transportation takes me everywhere and of course I was deathly nervous about driving so I never had it in sights.

However, I’ve missed out on a couple of jobs in my days because I didn’t have my license, so why not getting it now right? I think it’s worth saying that I did have a lesson when I was 19. No that doesn’t count? Ok.

So I was nervous getting behind the wheel, nervous driving and just nervous of crashing into something or someone, but I think I did surprisingly well, my nerves were all there but my turns were ok, I indicated well, so I mean it’s all about practice but I guess my nerves will calm down as I get more comfortable with it.

That’s me after, still nervous and excited that I’ve completed a driving lesson.

In running news, I just joined Black Girls Run! Yay me. I’m actually really excited to become apart of this group. I have two friends who kept telling me to join BGR! and I just never got around to it. Then one day I said you know what, let me do this and stop playing around. So I did!

My first run with them will be at 7:45am on Sunday, I mean hopefully because I just realized that I have to go into work for 10am and I am not sure if I can make both. Ugh, life kills me. But maybe I’ll be able to make it and if not I’ll try and do a run with them before Sunday? IDK, HELP!

Either way, I’m just excited that I get to run with them. I did NOT give up my affiliation with NYCInstaRunners. So I have TWO running groups! YAY.

Spinning with Greek Food

10:06 PM KyannaSimone 0 Comments

Happy Monday folks! Hope everyone had a good weekend. I surely did, I was nice and not hectic so it was good enough for me.

I bought a yoga DVD on Saturday! I've been dying to do some yoga for awhile and since it's a great cross training tool for us runners I thought it was about time I invested in a DVD. Needless to say I tried it out on Sunday and it was great, something I need to keep doing to my body can become nice and loose.

Today I did went to a spinning class. I've been to one before and I told myself I wasn't going to do another one, however I know spinning is one of those workouts that can be used as a cross training tool, so I gave it another shot.

*Aubrie on the spinning bike

I went to The Fitness Guru in DUMBO and it was great. Nice small gym, it was quite for a gym though, but for Monday it guess that's expected. There was a TV with a gauge to show how the group was doing and how we contributed to the overall gauge and honestly that was great. It was a team effort but an individual workout.

I believe it was 45 minutes long and yes I am super sweaty like after everything I do, but hey it's a workout so I expected to get sweaty.

My legs felt like jello afterwards, but of course we weren't done yet, we actually went down the the gym portion and worked out. That was difficult but it was great. I mean imaging going from a 45 minute spin session then going into a speed work treadmill workout and then a strength workout. Can you say burnout? But I didn't die, so it was worth it.

Afterwards we were so hungry and went to this Greek restaurant, I forgot the name of it, but it was SO GOOD! The French fries were to die for! Olivia oil and feta cheese? Yes please. I'm so sad that we didn't get a chance to take pictures of the food, but we cleaned plates though!

It was a great Monday! Hope the rest of the week feels like this.

How was your Monday today? Let me know.

A Healthy Thanksgiving

10:55 PM KyannaSimone 0 Comments

Thanksgiving is just around the corner and it’s always a time of indulgence. Between the potatoes, stuffing, mac and cheese, pumpkin pie and of course the turkey, who could even think about eating “healthy?"

This year I decided I want to cook for Thanksgiving, a very small dinner, probably my mom, aunt and possibly my grandmother (who is also an aunt but don’t ask,) will stop by and hangout, spend some time at my house, play games you know? The family shebang.

But with that, I want to make sure I can eat as healthy as possible without sacrificing flavor, so I’ve been experimenting with different recipes from now so come Thanksgiving they are perfected and ready to go.

So let me start off by saying that this isn’t my recipe it’s my friend Charlene’s. But not exactly because I really don’t know how she made it, so I put a twist on it. I don’t even know what to call it actually, so I gave it a name:

“The not-so mac and cheese”

Ingredients:

1 block of sharp cheddar cheese
2 tlbsp of butter
1 cup of milk
Salt and pepper (your own measure)
Bread crumbs (your own measure)
AND….

A head of cauliflower

Boil down the cauliflower for about 10 – 15 minutes, add milk and butter in a cup and stick it in the microwave for about three minutes and grate the cheese. Find a pan to put the cauliflower in, add the salt and pepper, pour the melted and butter over the cauliflower, add the grated cheese and the cover the top in breadcrumbs. Stick it in the oven for 20 – 30 minutes and then it’s time to eat.

Yes, cauliflower no macaroni in this “mac and cheese” How great is that? I mean I even fooled my mother and told her it was mac and cheese to get her opinion and she loved it. Check her reaction here:

**She didn’t know Graham’s name clearly and he’s clearly NOT overweight anymore**

Try it out and let me know if you guys like it. Send me your healthy Thanksgiving recipe; I would love to try it.

Once again this is not my recipe, it was Charlene’s, I just tweaked it, so thank you Charlene.

Breakfast with a Side of Speedwork

6:00 PM KyannaSimone 0 Comments

Yesterday was actually a very good day for me. I hope it was the same for you guys as well. I got to do what I wanted to do before heading off to rehearsal and the weather was in my favor up until last night, that’s when the temperature dropped and I was freezing. But I guess this is prefect time to start running and training for the NYC half huh?

Since we all know that breakfast is one of the important meals of the day, it’s something I usually find myself struggling to make and that’s only because I want to make the right decision. Making sure I’m eating something healthy and filling that can last me for a couple of hours in the work day and I’ve done that!

A Strawberry oat peanut butter smoothie. It’s so delicious that it’s just so delicious. Yupp, I said it.

Ingredients:
8 strawberries
½ cup steel cut oats
½ cup of milk (I use almond milk or 2% when I don't have almond)
2 tblsp of peanut butter
1 tblsp of blue agave

This is the best thing I’ve ever made and it makes me not want to cook breakfast anymore. I mean clearly I’m going to have mornings when I want to have the usual egg and bacon sandwich but this smoothie is “life” right now.

Other than my delicious smoothie I also did my first session of speed work, or at least when I considered to be speed work and let me tell you, it was hard.

I usually average about a 12:30 pace on a good day when running more than one mile and I can complete a mile in 10:30 again, on a good day but keeping that pace is where I struggle.
Yesterday afternoon I decided to go a run as fast as I could but taking short walk breaks in between. I was so out of breath but it felt good to push my body to that level.

A 9:14 mile I did yesterday. The fastest I’ve ever ran. So now the plan is to get this to be my overall average time when I’m running in races. I mean it’s going to take some work, but who isn’t ready to put in work for something they want to do right?

23 days until the Turkey Trot five-mile race in Brooklyn. Hoping to run this in under an hour, but that all comes with training.

Hey November and Fitness Goals!

11:22 PM KyannaSimone 0 Comments

Happy November folks! Only one month left until 2015 and I'm not sure how I feel about that. Where has the year gone and what have I done with it? Ah, I'll be sure to make these last few weeks worth it.

But let me say congratulations to everyone who ran the TCS NYC Marathon today. Even though I didn't get a chance to go out there myself, I did spend some time watching the coverage on TV and it was amazing. I just make me want to train harder and get out here and run my first marathon already.  But I know I need to take it easy because I'm not there yet, but I will be there.

So I've come up with an at home workout that I would like to complete for the entire month of November. I think it's a good mix of a full body workout and I would like to try it out for now. Maybe everyday or every other day and in the days in between I'll go running and cycling at the gym or maybe a different form of training, something to hit beast mode!

Is this too much? It could be. I plan to repeat this two to three times as a workout. I gave it a shot last week just to see if I could handle it and it wasn't too bad. I felt like I wanted to go to sleep right after which usually is a sign that a workout was good.

So this is my goal for the month as well as looking to become faster and PR of course in order to do that I have to train differently, speed work, hills, you know the good stuff that encompasses one in becoming a great runner.
